One of the joys of my pajama storytime is that I don’t loose kids once school starts, but I still like to honor that transition of returning to school after summer vacation or starting school for the first time.
Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? by Audrey Vernick
This is one of my favorites. The kids all laugh at the idea of a buffalo going to school but I also think it resonates with their real concerns about fitting in and being good enough.
Dad’s First Day by Mike Wohnoutke
This new book went straight from the new arrivals cart to my storytime. I love the father/ son relationship (Mom is not present, no reason given) and both the kids and parents in my storytime connected with the story. After a fun summer, Dad just isn’t ready for his son to start school. He’s nervous. He misses him! But when he sees what fun his son is having at school he feel all better.
My Teacher is a Monster (No I am Not) by Peter Brown
The older kids in my storytime really got a kick out of this one. It was fun to watch kids notice the changes in Ms. Kirby’s monster appearance.
Kindergarten readiness is more than just ABC’s and 123’s. Taking turns, following directions, and waiting patiently are important skills that children can learn from songs and games!
Jumping and Counting by Jim Gill: I love watching the kids straining to wait while we count before they can jump again. Excellent practice of executive function. Thanks Jim Gill!
